GOP Inaction Threatens Coal Miners' Pensions and Healthcare

23,000 coal miner retirees and their dependents are losing their retiree health care and pensions unless Congress votes by the end of April to pass the Miners Protection Act.

Kentucky Republican Senator Mitch McConnell - the Senate Majority Leader - hasn’t even scheduled a vote on the Miners Protection Act that would save the United Mine Workers of America pension and health plan.

The UMWA sent a letter earlier this month to the retirees warning that unless Congress votes to save them by the end of April, thousands of coal miners will lose retiree healthcare and pensions.

Peabody Coal used bankruptcy laws to betray its promise to pay for coal miner retiree pensions and healthcare. That's what created the crisis faced by the 23,000 miners and their dependents.
