California Labor Joins Union Delegation to Brazil by Angie Wei

Last week, I had the amazing opportunity to be a delegate representing the AFL-CIO to the 3rd Congress of the Trade Union Confederation of the Americas (TUCA), at the invitation of Executive Vice President Tefere Gebre. 

TUCA is the regional organization of the International Trade Union Confederation, the global labor movement.  Nearly 500 delegates representing countries across the Americas came together around a theme of More Democracy, More Rights, Better Jobs.

ENCORE! Stagehands at two Toronto venues vote to join IATSE

TORONTO, ON – IATSE Local 58 has expanded its jurisdiction with two existing employers; The Harbourfront Centre and Artscape. Stage employees at the Fleck Dance Theatre, located in The Harbourfront Centre, approached Local 58 for representation and the local filed an application for certification with the Ontario Labour Relations Board on April 4. Mirroring that story, Local 58 also began to work with the stage employees at Artscape Sandbox, and an application for that venue was filed on April 11.

200,000 convicted felons in Virginia will have the right to vote in November

Gov. Terry McAuliffe will allow more than 200,000 ex-cons in Virginia to register to vote in the upcoming presidential election, one of the biggest actions taken by a state to instantly restore voting rights.
The change applies to all felons who have completed their sentences and been released from supervised probation or parole. The Democratic governor’s decision particularly affects black residents of Virginia: 1 in 4 African Americans in the state has been permanently banned from voting because of laws restricting the rights of those with convictions.

Seattle’s Increased Minimum Wage Has Not Inflated Retail Prices

In a new report, researchers from the University of Washington presented data that showed 'little or no evidence' of price increases in most sectors. Before the minimum wage law took effect, most retailers

Verizon is offshoring jobs, records say

Verizon has been moving call center work overseas, and IT jobs may be shifting as well.
A key issue raised by labor unions in their weeklong strike against Verizon is the offshoring of work. The unions say Verizon has plans to send more jobs overseas. Verizon isn't saying what it is doing in this respect, but there is a paper trail of documents filed by its employees that point to offshoring. Read more
