Proposition 54: Not What it Seems

Too good to be true?  Probably is.  Proposition 54 is another example of the adage.  Pledging to bring more transparency to the legislative process, this proposition simply provides another tool for moneyed interests to stop progressive policies in California.  Sponsored by billionaire Charles Munger and wealth manager (and former legislator) Sam Blakslee, this Constitutional Amendment would require all legislation to be in print for 72 hours prior to being voted on.  Any interest could sue the legislature to enforce this provision.

Eleventh Hour Agreement Averts Strike By 28,000 Chicago Teachers

A strike by 28,000 Chicago teachers was narrowly averted Monday evening when the Chicago Teachers Union reached a tentative agreement with the school district only minutes before their midnight deadline.  With the strike off, classes are continuing as usual Tuesday morning.  Financed by 88 million dollars of surplus funds from the city’s Tax Increment Financing district, the agreement includes cost-of-living increases in the last two years of the four-year contract and maintains teacher pay increases associated with seniority and experience.  While saying there are stil

Harvard Dining Hall Workers Strike For $35K And Affordable Health Care

Harvard dining hall workers represented by UNITE HERE Local 26 are on strike. They say the strike will continue until they get a fair agreement.

The workers want to be paid at least $35,000 a year and affordable health care. The striking workers have widespread student support. Harvard Medical School students , graduate students at Harvard Law School, Harvard Divinity School, and Harvard School of Public Health have all pledged support.

Police Union Uses Go Fund Me For Flood Relief For Officers

The International Union of Police Associations is urging support for baton Rouge area police and deputies who lost their homes in the massive flooding in August.

[Rich Roberts]: "A lot of people were suffering under that - no question about it. The police officers and deputies were out helping the public and their families had to work on their own without their officers present.
