Re:       Paramount Stage 25 – Guard rails in perms

February 24, 2006

After receiving concerns from members of the Set Lighting Crew on “Out Of Practice” about the guard rails on the center catwalk of Stage 25 being unsafely low, I made an appointment with Brad Nelson, Executive Director of Environmental Health & Safety for Paramount Pictures, to investigate the complaint.

We found that the guard rails on the center catwalk had a height of 34 inches, a full eight inches below the mandated 42 inches. It appears that when the catwalks were renovated last year, the outside contractor raised the level of the decking but did not adjust the level of the guard rails. Stage 25 was the first stage to be renovated and they have not replaced any catwalks on any other stages.

We also checked the integrity and height of the un-renovated guard rails. Overall, the height was at the 42 inch level with one or two minor exceptions. A few places we found that the structural integrity of the guard rail needed to be bolstered.

The only other problem encountered in the perms was where the height of the decking changed levels. There are a few pieces of glowing material indicating the change but the amount is insignificant and could be easily covered by cable. We discussed striping the level change in Safety Yellow to make it more apparent.

Brad Nelson contacted the facilities  management department and arranged for them to prioritize the correction of these problems and he anticipates having the guard rail situation rectified within the next two to three weeks. I expect an update to their progress by the middle of next week.

Re:       Update Paramount Stage 25 – Guard rails in perms

March 7, 2006

I have just spoken with Brad Nelson at Paramount concerning the situation with the guard rails in the perms on Stage 25. The money to bring the guard rails up to 42” has been allocated and everyone involved with the repair has been notified of the project. It has been designated as a top priority and construction of the new guard rails could begin as early as next week.
