Where Are They Now?

Monday June 26th, 2006

Dear Scholarship Committee,
My daughter, Anna Katz was one of the early recipients of the 728 Scholarship award. The committee might be interested to know how well your investment has done. Anna, now 25, graduated from University of California Berkeley ("arguably, the finest public university in the world" as she would say) a valedictorian in art history. After graduation she got an administrative job at an engineering firm, where she was worked for a few years. Recently she applied to graduate schools in art history. USC and UCLA both offered her a no cost plus a nice stipend for four full years -- USC offered five. But she chose to work for her PhD. at Princeton University, which was eager to get her. Their graduate school admits 10 students a year in art history, and each of them (regardless of need) receive the same deal to prevent competition for money: no costs plus a 4 year stipend of nearly $22K.

Early on, the Scholarship committee identified and rewarded a true scholar. I am proud that my local union (with whom I identify so strongly) supported her great achievement.

Fraternally,
Michael Katz
